CHAPTER TWELVE
Sacrifices—
"Victoria, you must understand, this is not without cost to me also."
"I understand, Goddess. I do. Only too well."
* * *
Dead eyes mocked her.
A harsh wind blew through the clearing, loud and moaning, scalding flesh and sucking tears. A vampire wind, a mocking wind, a tormenting wind. It fed on their pain and suffering. Cruel laughter boomed through the night, riding the cyclone, circling like a predator stalked prey.
"Two years ago, I lost my wife; tonight, I have slain my only son." Arik's hollow voice lacked heart or hope. He spoke empty words that came from a dead place inside. "I will not live to the dawn."
Victoria blinked, and her careless eyelids released fresh tears that tracked down her cheeks. The tempest stole the proof of her grief, the same as the others. She stifled a moan and struggled to reconcile her truths.
Am I to add Arik to the list of deaths I’ve caused?
She stared into dead eyes and discovered bright flecks, green and red, within the richest amber. Without the light of his soul, they were like beautiful pieces of glass.
Logan's spirit did not rise from his body.
"Freya, help me," Victoria said, whispering the prayer. She already suffered anguish, grief, and suffocating guilt because of the deaths she had caused: Daniel, her parents, Jasper, and others.
With the whimsy of a cat, Freya answered some prayers and ignored others. Her goddess was never predictable, but it shocked Victoria when Freya's golden voice caressed her consciousness and said, Victoria, you must see clearly.
A stream of visions flooded her mind: ravens, dark magic, a woman's cruel voice commanding the basest emotions to create discord among wolves.
Arik's seiðr. The witch.
Arik passed a tender hand over his son's face, closing his eyes for eternity. His son's death had destroyed Arik's will to live. Defeat enshrouded the Alpha.
"In Freya's name, if you die tonight, I shall exact revenge for both you and your son upon our enemy." Victoria looked up to Arik so he would know she swore the oath with complete commitment. Her watching goddess bore silent witness.
Arik stiffened. "What do you mean?"
"This is the work of the seiðr, your witch. I could feel her, but I didn't understand until it was too late. She has used magic to manipulate us, turn us against one another. She inspires fear, anger, pride... Hatred."
Arik growled and flashed savage teeth. His eyes reflected blood lust. "I killed the seiðr!"
"She will win if you die, Arik."
Angry, he gripped her with strong hands, lifted her from the ground and slammed her to it again. The impact jarred her bones. "I ripped the heart from the witch and ate it!"
Victoria stared at him. Fear seized her, not of death, but of him. "Then she lives on within you. She is here, now, with us. The laughter on the wind... Can't you hear her? She is the woman within the ice. I have seen her and heard her since I came here, but I did not understand. I think I do now.
